Outdoor Accessible Spaces

Access, safety, and comfort outdoors
Outdoor areas should be easy to enjoy, not a daily hurdle. ARN Projects installs accessible external environments and works alongside architects, occupational therapists, and landscape designers to bring agreed plans to life.
We connect homes to gardens, vehicles, and community spaces. Gradients, materials, drainage, and handrails are selected with care so everyday routines like getting fresh air, meeting visitors, therapy sessions, and school runs feel simple and safe.
From survey to practical delivery
We start with a measured survey to confirm thresholds, slopes, surface condition, and drainage. Using the design team’s drawings, we check mobility needs, transfer points, and preferred routes.
We then share clear buildability feedback and options for the team to consider: length versus gradient, regrading versus a ramp, hard versus soft landscaping, and the lighting needed for evening use. Once details are agreed, we programme the works, coordinate suppliers, and install to specification.
Level access and ramps that work year-round
Step-free access is more than adding a ramp. In coordination with the architect and engineer, we build transitions that shed water away from the building, keep thresholds dry, and protect door performance.
Where space is limited, landings and switchbacks keep gradients within limits. If a permanent solution is not right for the property, modular systems give immediate access and can be moved or reconfigured later.
Handrails, upstands, and kerbs are positioned to the approved details so wheelchair users and walkers can move with confidence.
Surfaces, drainage, and maintenance
We supply and install surface materials specified by the design team, or recommend options for approval when needed.
Typical choices include textured pavers, resin-bound aggregates, brushed concrete, and decking with anti-slip treatment. Falls and channels are set out to prevent ponding. Permeable build-ups and soakaways are used to manage heavy rain.
At handover we explain simple upkeep with regular sweeping, algae control, and resealing where relevant. This is so the space stays safe through the seasons.
Typical scopes we deliver
We provide compliant, low-maintenance installations with predictable delivery, working closely with architects, OTs, and landscape designers.
- Regraded level access at door thresholds with effective drainage
- Ramps and landings with correct gradients, handrails, and guarding
- Resin-bound, paver, concrete, or treated decking surfaces for safe mobility
- Accessible terraces and seating areas planned for transfers and carers
- Path networks to vehicles, bins, stores, and garden features
Lighting, tactile cues, and wayfinding for confident use in low light
Terraces, seating, and sensory spaces
Good access should lead to spaces where people want to spend time. We construct terraces with level thresholds, add shade or shelter where required, and set out seating so transfers and carer positioning are comfortable.
Sensory planting, gentle lighting, and low-level water or sound features can support relaxation and therapy goals. Paths are planned as predictable loops to reduce fatigue and cut backtracking.
Governance and handover
Budgets are itemised and any change requires written approval. RAMS and safeguarding are agreed before work begins.
At handover you receive certificates where applicable, warranties, product care guidance, and clear photographs of key details such as edgings, thresholds, and drainage routes.
This makes future maintenance and adjustments straightforward and audit-ready.
